FASD Community Outreach is a joint effort of McMan and Catholic Social Services. We work to . . .
- Educate adults and children on the effects of alcohol, both to themselves and their children to come.
- Support mother healthy choices and encourage them to seek help if they are addicted. AB Health Services (formerly AADAC), family doctors and supportive friends or family can make a difference.
- Encourage Early Diagnosis- the most important step! Doctors, Psychologists or Child and Family Services can make appropriate referrals.
- Understand, forgive and help individuals with grief and loss.
- Develop a long term plan for the entire family. FASD is complicated, inconsistent and will challenge everyone.
- Access supports through extended family, or community services such as Family Support for Children with Disabilities, AISH, or Persons with Developmental Disabilities.
Our practice follows Dr. Ann Streissguth’s research and experience with individuals who are affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and their caregivers. We use many resources from Community based publications like ‘Strategies Not Solutions’, Alberta Learning’s, ‘Teaching Students with FASD’ and Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse.
We assist individuals in obtaining a diagnosis and then work to support the family after this process. This includes linking them to available resources in their community. A Caregiver Support Group runs monthly from September – May and is a great source of support and information between those who live and work with our clients.
